Aposematism and Structural colour Theme: Engineering in Nature
Home Science Photo Hunt

The Science

this beetle uses bright red and black coloring as aposematic coloration—a visual warning to predators that it tastes bad or is dangerous. Materials engineers study how insects generate these bright, resilient pigments and microsurface structures. This inspires the development of fade-resistant, non-toxic industrial coatings and safety signage that remains highly visible without relying on chemical dyes that degrade under UV light.

Why I Chose It

I selected this photo because the colours on this beetle were very attracting which is almost the opposite of what the beetle wants by having these colours(hahaha). And also this raw photo, captured without any expensive camera but an android, showed the complicated structure of a beetle and its surface pattern and texture.
