The Science
This photo captures leaf senescence, the aging process plants use to survive harsh conditions. The green chlorophyll in the yellow leaf has broken down due to low water and sunlight stress, revealing carotenoid pigments that were always there. The pale white leaf is further along — it has lost almost all pigments and is now dry plant matter ready to decompose. In dry land, trees shed leaves early to conserve water, and the nutrients from these leaves return to the soil through decomposition. You see this most in autumn or drought conditions because plants cut off nutrients to leaves they can’t support.
