A rainbow is a brilliant display of optical science that happens when sunlight meets millions of falling raindrops. As sunlight enters a raindrop, it slows down and bends, a process called refraction. The light then reflects off the back inside wall of the droplet and bends again as it exits back into the air. Because white light is actually a mix of all colors, and each color bends at a slightly different angle, the raindrop acts like a tiny prism, separating the sunlight into the stunning spectrum of colors you see in the sky.
