Realism or Locality: Which will you choose?

Quantum Entanglement Science Photo Hunt Challenge # 1 Theme: Science Around Us
Home Science Photo Hunt

The Science

Realism: the concept that objects have definite properties before we measure them. Locality: the concept that nothing travels faster than the speed of light. Until recently, we believed the universe possessed both. However, quantum entanglement shatters this framework. Quantum entanglement is like a pair of particles that are connected. When one of the particles is observed, the other particle instantly chooses a corresponding state, no matter the distance. The 2022 Nobel Prize experiments proved that the universe cannot be both local and realistic. Thus, physicists have to make a hard choice: abandon locality or abandon realism.

Why I Chose It

I selected this photo it uses a simple everyday object to show a deep mystery of physics. It challenges us to view an ordinary looking scene and realize that at the atomic scale, the universe defies our common sense.
