Life Between the Cracks
The Science
This photo shows a small plant growing through the narrow cracks between paving blocks. The seed was likely carried by wind, rain, or birds and became trapped in the crack, where dust, tiny soil particles, and moisture collected. After receiving enough water, sunlight, and air, the seed germinated and began to grow. As the roots grow deeper, they slowly widen the cracks. This process is called biological weathering, where living organisms such as plant roots gradually break down rocks or hard surfaces over time.
Why I Chose It
I selected this photo because it shows that plants can grow even in small cracks where there is very little soil.It reminds us that nature is strong and can adapt to difficult places. This photo also shows that science can be seen in simple things around us every day.
