Engineering in Nature: Forces in Action isnβt about pretty pictures. We want students who spot physics in the wild and explain it clearly. Hereβs how to stand out:
How We Judge Your Entry:
1. Relevance to Theme (20%)
Show
both engineering and forces in nature. Spider webs use tension. Honeycombs show compression. Tree roots fight gravity on slopes. Ask: βDoes this prove nature is an engineer?β
2. Scientific Understanding (25%)
Donβt just name the force β explain it. For a birdβs nest, describe how woven twigs create friction against wind and gravity. For a leaf with water, explain surface tension. Show us the
how.
3. Originality & Creativity (20%)
Weβll see hundreds of webs. Surprise us. Find forces in seashells, seed pods, termite mounds, or bent grass. Look closer.
4. Photo Clarity (15%)
Use natural light. Get close. Keep your subject sharp and in focus. We canβt judge blurry photos.
5. Quality of Explanation (20%)
Your caption matters. In 2-4 sentences, connect photo to science. Example: βThese roots act as anchors. Thicker roots handle tension from the treeβs weight, stopping it from sliding.β
