Real Classroom Stories
Story 1: The Circuit Activity
I told my students that tomorrow we will do an activity on open and closed circuits.
I arranged the material myself. But when I came to class the next day, 2 students brought toy-type circuit kits. Others brought batteries, wires, and whatever they could find at home.
Not only did everyone make the circuit together, but they also helped each other and shared their things.
The best part? The students who usually stay quiet during lectures were the first ones to connect the wires and explain how the circuit works.
Story 2: The Integers Number Line Activity
One day I called two students and told them, that tomorrow we will do an activity on integers. We will also record a video of the activity, so please do a rehearsal. I guided them about the steps of the activity ask them you have to take a thread and put positive and negative numbers on it with zero in the middle. Students should stand on the thread according to their height. Taller students stand on the positive side starting from zero, and shorter students on the negative side starting from zero. Also ask them to prepare different color balls to help with addition and subtraction.’
Believe me, the next day the students came fully prepared. They did the demonstration, set up the material, and even made the groups themselves.
After that day, the mathematics teacher told me that the mistakes they used to make with integers and signs are gone now.
Story 3: The Seed Germination Activity
One day I told the class that today when you go home, take a disposable transparent plastic cup and some bowls. Put cotton in them, make it wet, and put lentils, chickpeas, fenugreek seeds, coriander seeds, mung beans, and fennel seeds on it. Keep it in a safe place. Take one page and note the changes daily. Also compare the growth of all seeds. The cotton should stay wet. And send me a photo daily.
You should see the students’ interest! Out of 30 students, 20 sent me photos. Not just for one day, but the whole week. Even on weekends I got photos.
There was no cost and no time wasted. The children observed seed germination themselves. Their happy faces are still in front of my eyes when they told me: ‘Miss, today it grew this much!
These 3 stories show that when we trust students and give them simple tasks, they become excited, responsible, and active learner.
Why I Shared These Stories*
Some teachers say,“Who will pay for this? How will we manage time? Who will control the class? Nothing will come out of it.”
But that is not true.
Even with limited things we can do a lot. We just need a little planning.
If we guide children a little, they even start giving ideas to teachers.
What Are the Benefits?
Benefits of Hands on learning are1. Builds problem-solving skill: Students learn from mistakes and try again.
2. Better memory :Doing creates strong and better memory for exams.
3. Improves motor + social skills : Group work teaches sharing and teamwork.
4. Motivates students :Students come to school happily and even on weekends they stay involved.
5. Clears difficult concepts: Difficult concept Like addition & substraction of integers and germination of seeds (plant growth) become easy.
6. No cost, high interest :As in the seed activity, learning happened with zero cost.
7. Real-world use : Students connect lessons to daily life.
8. More creativity + confidence :Students take ownership and explain to others.
9. Deeper understanding :Books say “What”. Hands-on shows “Why” and “How”.
What Are the Challenges?
Time :
Many teachers think: “If we do activities, the syllabus will not be completed. It will waste time.”
Mindset of Teachers and Parents
Many believe: “Just focus on tests and grades. Children need only to do rote memorization for good marks.
Classroom management
Group work and movement can make class noisy.
Resources - Fear that activities need costly material.
Training :Teachers need ready-made, topic-related activities that take less time.
How to Change The Mindset ?
For Teachers: Do one small 10-minute activity with each lesson. It saves time, it does not waste time.
For Parents: Do one simple activity at home each week. 10 minutes of doing is better than 1 hour of cramming.
For Schools: Give teachers ready activities for each chapter. Do training workshops.
For Students: Join science fairs and small projects.
Use simple things: Cups, cotton, thread, paper, bottles. Give students responsibility.
Why are hands on activities important for future?
Future jobs we will need people who can solve problems, observe things, take responsibility, work in teams, and think creatively.
If we only study for examination or grades, students do not have the skill to perform different tasks.If we learn by doing, students are ready for real life.
In short we can finish the syllabus and do hands-on learning together. We do not have to choose between good grades and real learning. With hands-on, we get both.
