But there is hope. That hope is called biotechnology.
Biotechnology means using science and living organisms, such as bacteria and plants, to improve our lives. In agriculture, it is becoming a game changer for Pakistan. It can help farmers grow more food, use less water and fewer chemicals, and respond to climate change.
What Is Agricultural Biotechnology?
In simple words, agricultural biotechnology means using scientific methods to improve crops and animals. Instead of waiting for these changes to happen slowly in nature, scientists use controlled methods to develop useful characteristics.
Three important tools used in agricultural biotechnology are:
- Genetic engineering
- Tissue culture
- Biofertilizers
These methods are already being used in Pakistan and are producing useful results.
Three Ways Biotechnology Is Helping Our Farmers
1. Bt Cotton: Fighting Certain Pests
One of the biggest problems faced by cotton farmers is the bollworm, commonly known as sundi. In the past, farmers often had to spray costly and potentially harmful pesticides several times.
Bt cotton contains a gene from a soil bacterium called Bacillus thuringiensis. This allows the plant to produce a protein that protects it against certain bollworm pests. As a result, farmers may reduce some pesticide use, save money, and protect their crops more effectively.
2. Tissue Culture: Producing Healthy Plants in a Laboratory
Have you ever seen banana or potato farms? Producing healthy plants can be difficult because plant diseases may spread quickly.
Tissue culture can help solve this problem. In a clean laboratory, scientists take a small piece from a healthy plant and use it to grow hundreds of genetically similar plants. When clean and tested plant material is used, this method can produce healthy plants on a large scale.
Institutions such as NIBGE Faisalabad and AARI work on crops including potato, banana, and sugarcane. This can help farmers obtain better-quality plants and improve crop production.
3. Biofertilizers: Helpful Microorganisms for the Soil
Chemical fertilizers can be expensive and may affect soil health when they are not used properly. Biofertilizers contain beneficial microorganisms that help plants obtain nutrients from the soil.
For example, Rhizobium bacteria support legume crops such as lentils, chickpeas, peas, and beans by helping them obtain nitrogen. Biofertilizers can reduce dependence on some chemical fertilizers, improve nutrient availability, and support healthier soil.

While researching this article, I learned about the valuable work being carried out at NIBGE in Faisalabad. Its scientists are not only working in laboratories; they are also addressing real agricultural problems.
NIBGE researchers are studying wheat varieties that may perform better under limited water and saline soil conditions. This work is especially important for areas of South Punjab and Sindh. They are also studying ways to improve the nutritional quality of crops.
Learning about this work made me proud that Pakistani scientists are using biotechnology to address problems faced by our own country.
