What I made
Building a simple solar-powered lantern using a small solar panel, rechargeable battery, and LED. This hands-on STEM project introduces the basics of solar energy, electric circuits, and renewable power while creating a practical light source for power outages.

Materials & Components

Material and Tools required for making Solar Lantern 1-watt small Solar Panel Cardboard sheet 1 ft square 3.7-volt rechargeable cell Small LED panel Connecting wire (2 ft) Switch Template for box making Scissors Box knife Soldering iron Hot Glue gun Tape Multi-meter

How to Make It

  1. 1
    Build the Lantern Body Use the cardboard template to cut and fold the main box. Leave both front and back sides open. Cut the two triangular side pieces and keep them aside for final assembly.

    Prepare the Wires Cut eight pieces of wire, each about 3 inches long. Solder two wires to each component: Solar panel LED panel Battery Switch

    Identify Battery Polarity If the battery terminals are not marked: Set the multimeter to the 20V DC range. Connect the probes to the battery. If the reading is negative, swap the probes. Mark the positive and negative terminals using tape.

    Test the Solar Panel Place the solar panel in direct sunlight. Use the multimeter to identify the positive and negative terminals. Label both wires clearly.

    Install the Solar Panel Make two holes in one side of the cardboard box. Pass the solar panel wires through the holes. Secure the panel using a hot glue gun.

    Install the LED and Switch Make a hole for the LED panel on the opposite side. Glue the LED securely in place. Create a slot above the LED for the switch. Fix the switch using hot glue.

    Make the Circuit Connections Connect the components as follows: Make the Circuit Connections Connect the components as follows: Join together: Positive terminal of the solar panel Positive terminal of the battery Positive terminal of the LED Connect: Negative terminal of the LED → one terminal of the switch Other switch terminal → negative terminal of the battery and negative terminal of the solar panel Important: Double-check all wiring before powering the circuit. Incorrect connections may damage the components.

    Final Assembly Place the battery inside the lantern. Secure it using hot glue. Arrange all wires neatly inside the box. Attach the triangular side pieces to close the lantern. Your DIY Solar Lantern is now ready to use.
