Mini Greenhouse Model: Demonstrating the Greenhouse Effect in DIY Biology Projects

Why I made it
I made the Mini Greenhouse Model to demonstrate the greenhouse effect and show how heat gets trapped inside a greenhouse. This project helps explain how sunlight warms the Earth and how greenhouse gases can increase temperature by trapping heat. It is a simple and practical way to understand an important environmental science concept.

What I learned
I learned how the greenhouse effect works and how heat can be trapped inside an enclosed space. I also learned the importance of greenhouse gases in regulating Earth's temperature and gained hands-on experience in building a simple scientific model and observing temperature changes.

Materials & Components

Clear plastic or glass container (e.g., a small clear plastic box or a glass jar with a lid) Small potted plant or seeds (choose a fast-growing plant like lettuce, herbs, or small flowers) Potting soil Water Small stones or pebbles Scissors or craft knife Tape or glue

How to Make It

  1. 1
Select a Container: Choose a clear plastic or glass container that can act as the mini greenhouse. It should have a lid or cover to trap heat inside.
  2. 2
Prepare the Container: Remove any labels or stickers from the container and clean it thoroughly.
  3. 3
Add Drainage Layer: Place a layer of small stones or pebbles at the bottom of the container. This will help with drainage and prevent waterlogged soil.
  4. 4
Plant the Seeds or Seedling: If you are using seeds, sow them in the potting soil according to the instructions on the seed packet. If you have a small potted plant, gently transfer it into the container with the potting soil.
  5. 5
Water the Plant: Give the plant enough water to keep the soil moist but not soggy.
  6. 6
Close the Lid: Place the lid on the container and secure it tightly. Make sure it is transparent to allow sunlight to enter.
  7. 7
Place in Sunlight: Put the mini greenhouse model in a sunny spot where it can receive ample sunlight throughout the day.
  8. 8
Observe and Record: Over the next few days and weeks, observe the plant’s growth inside the mini greenhouse. Record any changes you see, such as increased temperature and condensation inside the container.
