When you look up at the night sky, you see our one, familiar Moon. But if you were standing on Jupiter, the view would be completely different. Jupiter is so massive that it acts like its own mini-solar system, boasting a staggering 95 officially recognized moons!

While that is a lot of celestial neighbors, four of these moons are the true stars of the show. Discovered by the famous astronomer Galileo Galilei in 1610, they are known as the Galilean Moons. Let’s take a quick trip to meet them.

1. Io: The Space Pizza

Io is the most volcanically active world in our entire solar system. Because it is constantly being pulled and stretched by Jupiter’s immense gravity, its insides melt. This causes hundreds of volcanoes to blast yellow, red, and black sulfur all over its surface, making it look exactly like a giant, floating space pizza.

2. Europa: The Ocean World

Europa is the complete opposite of Io. It is covered in a thick, ultra-smooth crust of solid ice. Scientists are incredibly excited about Europa because beneath that ice lies a hidden, liquid water ocean. In fact, Europa might hold twice as much water as all of Earth’s oceans combined, making it one of the best places to look for alien microbial life!

3. Ganymede: The Titan

Ganymede is the heavyweight champion of moons. It is the largest moon in the solar system—so big that it is actually larger than the planet Mercury! It is also the only moon known to have its own magnetic field, just like Earth.

4. Callisto: The Ancient Shield

Callisto is the most heavily cratered object in the solar system. It is a quiet, icy world covered in scars from billions of years of space rock impacts. Because its surface hasn't changed much since it formed, studying Callisto is like looking at a time capsule of the early solar system.

Jupiter's moons teach us that oceans and activity can exist in the freezing outer edges of space. Robotic space missions, like NASA's Europa Clipper, are currently on their way to study these worlds closer than ever before. Who knows what secrets they will unlock next?
